Mission: To convene key representatives of local leadership groups with a vested interest
in the education of black students and ultimately all students, for the purpose of designing replicable strategies for empowerment
of students, parents, and community groups which will result in significantly improved achievement of black students in public
schools.
On April 12, 2008, the Arlington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. met
with representatives from 9 other organizations (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., 100 Black Men, Boys and Girls Club of Arlington, Arlington Police Department,
Arlington Independent School District, and Arlington African American Chamber of Commerce) to discuss the state of education
of African American students in the Arlington Independent School District (AISD). The organizations agreed to combine
resources for the purpose of offering viable solutions to the community that assist students in overcoming academic deficiencies
and other concerns plaguing African Americans.
The coalition operates under the name of “Arlington
Coalition for Education” and its 2009 – 2010 focus is assisting in the reduction of the dropout rate in AISD.
Planned activities are participation in the citywide Success in School Summit, sponsoring the Leaders
Inspiring Families For Excellence Academy, and supporting Project Pass.
