On December 10,
1988, as gentle, cool winds and persistent precipitation invaded the exterior atmosphere at the University of Texas at Arlington,
School of Social Work Building, the interior, however, painted a somewhat different picture. An air of exultation and celebration
permeated the environment as forty-eight (48) members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. pledged their commitment to the chartering
of the Arlington Alumnae Chapter.
Soror Morlin
McCoy, Southwest Regional Director, and Deltas from the surrounding chapters of Dallas, Fort Worth and Metropolitan Dallas joined in the witnessing of this historic occasion.
Sorors who lived and worked in the Metroplex felt that Arlington, located centrally
to Dallas and Fort Worth, warranted a chapter because of the various cultural, social, economic and educational needs of the
community. This was an opportunity for Sorors, after identifying the needs of the community, to implement Delta’s
Five Point Program. Segments of Arlington were affluent, but the socioeconomic development of some residents remained
unaddressed.
The initial goals were:
1. To reclaim inactive Sorors which would provide a core group
of members for the implementation of Delta Sigma Theta’s programs.
2. To foster a strong and supportive relationship with the collegiate chapters in our area, and
3. To provide positive role models, strong leadership and program initiatives needed in the Arlington
community.
