The Arlington Alumnae Chapter was chartered on December 10, 1988. The initial goals were: to reclaim inactive Sorors which would provide a core group of members for the implementation of Delta Sigma Theta’s programs; to foster a strong and supportive relationship with the collegiate chapters in our area, and provide positive role models, strong leadership and program initiatives needed in the Arlington community.

Today, the goals are still the same. Scholarship, Service and Sisterhood has continued to be the primary focus of the Chapter. Over the twenty-two years of existence the Chapter has contributed in excess of $100,000 to high school seniors in Arlington and Grand Prairie. The Chapter has sponsored many fundraising activities to support the scholarship fund and public service activities.

The Arlington Alumnae Chapter has maintained a presence in the community since inception. The Chapter has served as hostess for the pass twenty years at the Martin Luther King Jr. annual celebration, and presented awards to the first black Mayor and Police Chief of Arlington. Food and monetary donations have been made to Mission Arlington, Arlington Charities, and Arlington Night Shelter. The Chapter has sponsored members in AIDS, Breast Cancer and Easter Seal Walk- A- Thons. Toys and Food are donated to needy families at Christmas. Voter Registration drives are held prior to elections. Visits have been made to nursing homes where members play games and provide entertainment to the patients. Gift bags consisting of soap, tooth paste, lotion and socks are also presented. Not only is the Chapter active in the Community but is active in the Schools.

Chapter members implemented the School America Program whereby members went to area schools to read to students, and also sponsored a workshop on Preparing Our Sons for Manhood. Currently Arlington Alumnae Chapter is involved with the Delta Academy, Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) and EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) Programs focusing on young adults ranging from the ages of 11 – 18 in local schools. The Chapter’s outreach extends internationally. We have provided support to church groups doing mission work in Africa and shoes to the children of HIV parents in Jamaica.

We are currently in the year of 2011 and continuing to show our support for education through participation in the March in Austin standing against injustice of the educational budget cuts. Educating and encouraging women of all ages to get screened for Breast Cancer and participating in the 3-day Susan G. Komen Walk for a Cure for the 2nd year in a row. We will continue to mentor the youth of Arlington and Grand Prairie through our Delta Academy, Delta GEMS and EMBODI programs and educate other Arlington and Grand Prairie residents on budgeting and a guide to homeownership. In addition, we will continue to provide scholarships to assist students in furthering their education. The Arlington Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will continue to strive and make a difference in the community we live and serve in.
